Greetings from Norwell MA

Town Meeting: Monday, May 12, 7:30 PM

Congratulations Patricia Anderson , our new Town Clerk, and Karen Joseph and Sally Turner for Planning Board seats.  See Politics for resumes of the winners

Spring is popping!

Crosswalks: due this spring

  • One crosswalk will run between the Cushing Center and Scituate Federal (South Scituate branch) at 1 River Street and Gordon Insurance at 680 Main Street.  (The clock  corner)
  • Another crosswalk will run between Quik Pik and Cavanaro Consulting
  • They look like brick, blending in with the Cushing Center, Central Fire Station and Scituate Federal Savings Bank.
  • Should calm traffic in the Center to keep it a pedestrian safe and pedestrian friendly place.

Main Street is getting a  new surface... (Traffic delays almost over)

Bicyclists rejoice!

This site provides old fashioned, down home information about our town, Norwell.  Whether you're here looking for basic specs about the town, or wish to check out the schools, or are frustrated with internet searches and want Norwell business links, we hope you enjoy the site, and always welcome suggestions on what you would like to see. (Y)our New Clock

Thanks to the Community Preservation Committee for overseeing installation and paying for this beautiful new landmark addition to the Center.

This is the Eastern Box Turtle, the endangered turtle who makes its home at the site of the town's proposed cemetery in the Stetson Meadows.

The initial design has been submitted, and the next step is identifying which and how much land the town must set aside for habitat protection of this endangered reptile.

You can find these reptiles in the upland woods off the trials that begin at the end of Stetson Shrine Lane and run to the Recreation corner near the Stetson Ford House on Meadow Farms Way.

What's all the fuss over this guy?

Spring flowers!  First up are always near a solar powered stone wall.

Links for young athletes:

Get out and see Norwell MA!  Whether it's jogging along the North River, or walking for exercise, outdoor fun is close by. Our Recreation page has suggestions on walking trails, sledding hills, the best ice in town (if winter comes), and so on.  Also, check our Wildlife Scenes, or On the Farm, for a taste of the rural side of Norwell.  See Around Town for seasonal themes.

Schools:

Norwell's  school system is a source of well deserved town pride. This year's seniors have received acceptance letters from Cornell and Princeton, several NESCAC schools, BC & BU, U Mass's Commonwealth College, and other top schools.   Learn more about Norwell's quest for excellence at the school system's own site.

For more about Norwell's extraordinary Robotics program, click to the Norwell High Robotics page or see where it all begins, at the Elementary School Robotics page.

Speaking of NHS, former Norwell MA High School alumni(ae) can be listed here  by class year.   Email your class year, current address, email address, and any other information... then email an old friend with the link to NHS alumni.  Then you need to spread the word to make it a meaningful resource.

Norwell Center is getting lots of attention to capitalize on the increased traffic anticipated with the Greenbush rail stop 3 miles to our east.  Citizens are trying to make Norwell Center more of a destination, not just a pass-through, and are now meeting, planning, and budgeting. There is a vibrant retail presence for everything from coffee at Drums or Dunkin Donuts, to Joseph's Hardware to Insurance.    Contact us if you'd like to have a hand in the design, development, or implementation of these upgrades, or visit our own dedicated page.

You can also rent the Cushing Memorial Hall in Norwell Center, by calling 781-659-2674. Click here for more pictures.

In Norwell Center view the Veterans Memorial and see how many names you recognize.  As a lifelong Norwellian whose father's name is inscribed, (Andy Gordon - having returned from Italy in 1945 with a Bronze Star, Combat Infantry badge, and three Purple Hearts), I recognize many names of the men and women who risked their lives that we may live free.   Freedom isn't free - it comes at a high price.

Some of us knew and remember those who fought but never returned from foreign lands to live out their lives here in this great land.  If we cannot remember them individually, we must remember them collectively.  Take time to thank a vet for safeguarding (y)our freedom.

New to town, or planning on moving here?  Contact Norwell Sociables - http://www.norwellsociables.org a social group open to all Norwell residents.  Membership is a nominal $15.00 per year.   Contact Betty Hartford at 781-659-4399, or write to her at 37 Ford's Crossing, Norwell, MA 02061

In memory of Jay Corcoran, killed by terrorists on Flight 175, September 11, 2001: Contributions may be made to the Jay Corcoran Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Citizens Bank, 36 Washington St., Norwell, MA 02061  Contributions have reached the $150,000 originally envisioned, thanks to many generous donors; but to allow as many scholarships as possible, continued donations are needed.. To sustain Jay's legacy for the value of education, the Jay Corcoran Scholarship Fund will provide 4-year $2,500 scholarships for as many High School Seniors as funds allow.  Last year two seniors received this $10,000 award.  For more information about the dinner-dance, or the annual Jay Corcoran Golf tournament, call Dianne Corcoran at 781-659-7710.

In memory: Andy Gordon
