Fish bite at Norris' Reservation all year long... but they usually stock rainbow trout in April. Shhh

Prefer salt water, and bigger fish? Schoolies are in the river in spring and fall!  Best time for stripers is at the slack tide (top of the tide), even better at nighttime (or daybreak).   Mackeral or eels make great bait. On the North River, you can never go wrong!

(That's your webmaster with a striper, early in the morning, just after slack tide)

A suggested resolution for this year: Discover more of Norwell's Recreational opportunities

Although Norwell's attraction as a place to live, work, and play places ongoing pressure on undeveloped land, there is still a lot of open space in town. Norwell's recent passage of the Community Preservation Act is testament to its commitment to preserving open spaces.  These stone walls to the right are a reminder of Norwell's farming history and open pastures.

Hint: Click to Recreation for walking trials etc.

. View the Veterans Memorial!  You'll recognize many names from around town, especially if you've lived in Norwell for a while. Or, visit our Veterans page for lists of Norwellians from WWII,  Korea, and Viet Nam.  Always take time to thank a Veteran.

We owe so much to those who place their lives in front of ours when our country faces danger or evil, so that we may live, with God endowed liberties, and pursue happiness as we choose.

Post Blizzard conditions

sure, we have igloos in Norwell, when the snow is just right!

Other evidence of a cold winter:  A frozen North River!  Now that's cold!!

Skating in Norwell -

When the ice returns next winter, some favorite skating spots include:
  • Jacobs Pond, at Main Street, at the Hanover line (Route 123). Can be windy. Plenty of parking.
  • Mill Pond, off Central Street, just 1/4 mile down from the Center. Usually great ice, well maintained by neighbors
  • Norris Reservation, across from the Post office, off Dover Street. Good parking.
  • Tack Factory Pond, off Tiffany Road, near Church Street, 3rd Herring Brook.  Access is limited
  • Bogs, and ponds at Cross Street, depending on whether new sand has been laid down over the bogs, this can be have great ice.

Here's a scene from Tack Factory Pond,  on the Third Herring Brook on the Norwell - Hanover town line.

Other good local spots are off Mill Lane (which is off Central Street), Off Mount Blue / My Hope Streets where the best pick-up hockey games are usually found, the bogs (when frozen) off Cross Street, and Jacobs Pond on Route 123 (which needs more, lengthier, cold weather).

BlackIce.jpg (19839 bytes) Black Ice: Black Ice doesn't necessarily mean thin ice (although thin ice is usually black too).  Black Ice means it doesn't have old snow melted into it, or lots of air trapped in it.  It's crisper, harder, and makes for faster skating, faster turning, and better hockey.  A true pond skater's delight. (almost like rink ice!)
Naturally, Hot Chocolate is an important ingredient to any skating experience, as these intrepid Norwell skaters will quickly attest.

Especially after a hard-fought game of pond hockey (no lift, no check, all fun).

Norwell Center

CenterCommon.jpg (17912 bytes)

At Norwell Center, notice the Civil War monument on the common, beautifully encircled by colorful flowers that last three full seasons!.

To the right, down River Street, is First Parish Church, the site of the Annual Harvest Festival in late October.

And to the left is the James Library for the Performing Arts. This building has been restored to its original Victorian elegance, and is the home of numerous art shows, concerts, and so forth. Always worth a visit.

.. and to the right, is the Cushing Center, the former home of the Town Offices, but which are now located at 345 Main Street.  The Cushing Center is available for hire, and is often the source of music or other festivities on a Friday or Saturday night for a wedding, birthday, reunion, or non-profit fund raising function. Indian Summer activities:

A lot of people get away on weekends in the fall, some spending the time locally, others getting far out of town.  The Cape is only 45 minutes to the south, Boston a half hour north, and New Hampshire and Maine about an hour north via Routes 93 (central and western NH) and 95 (eastern NH & Maine).  Newport RI is a little over an hour, and a great day trip to that beautiful port.
