Two textured crosswalks have been approved for installation in Norwell Center.  These crosswalks:

  • Look like brick, blending in with the Cushing Center, Central Fire Station and Scituate Federal Savings Bank.
  • Are durable - they should last easily as long as until the State re-paves Rt 123 in the Center (and which they will replace, on their nickel)
  • Will allow snow plows to pass over (very important for our highway department)
  • Should calm traffic in the Center to keep it a pedestrian safe and pedestrian friendly place.

(Coming soon - new crosswalks)

Crosswalks history: Our town planner, Todd Thomas, with quiet but effective research by Planning Board member Charles Markham, discovered a pedestrian safety fund, financed by developers who prefer this fund to installing expensive sidewalks to nowhere.   Some of this money is earmarked for other projects, but lots is unencumbered.  This is a great match for crosswalks in Norwell Center..  The Planning Board and Selectmen have given qualified approval to a 2 crosswalk project, so we may be able to slow traffic in the Center some time this summer if all goes well. (August 2007 likely)

The projects submitted for consideration are only upgrades for the two painted crosswalks already in the Center: between Scituate Federal bank and the Cushing Center (Crosswalk A) and between Quik Pik and Cavanaro Consulting (Crosswalk B).

Other crosswalks will require additional engineering, including sight line analysis and other engineering review, so were not included in this first round.  If the crosswalks envisioned by the group in these initial two locations are applauded by the broader public, we would pursue other crosswalks at traffic calming steps and safer pedestrian use in the Center.
